There's a particular exhaustion that only shows in the legs and the boots — dusty, worn, planted wide as if still bracing against the last miles. That's what this photogravure captures first: a husband and wife (us) standing in the Praza do Obradoiro, finally still after weeks of walking, with the twin baroque towers of Santiago Cathedral rising behind us like a held breath finally released. The grain and tone of the photogravure process — soft, textured, timeworn — turn the moment into something that feels less like a snapshot and more like a memory already forming, as if the image itself has walked the Camino, too.

The scale says everything we can't. The cathedral dwarfs us, its spires disappearing into a bruised, cloud-streaked sky, while in the background other pilgrims cross the square with packs still on their backs and poles still in hand — still arriving. But we have stopped. That's the whole story: not triumph exactly, but relief, camaraderie, and quiet disbelief that the walking is finally over and the square, at last, is real. And yet a sense that the journey never ends.

For this hand-pulled photogravure etching, we press ink into fine art paper from a plate we create from the original image. Print is made with Gamblin Bone Black ink on Hahnemühle Copperplate paper.
